The Monastery of St. Athanasios of Vavouri (Agios Athanasios Vavouriou) is located just below the village Vavouri, built on a small hill between the mountains of Mourganas, in an area with dense vegetation. The exact year of its foundation is unknown but it is speculated that it was built in the 17th century based on the historical documentation. As it seems, it has always been a small, calm Monastery without many monks. During the Second World War it was burned by German troops
and today it is entirely renovated. The Katholikon of the Monastery, maintained probably since its founding, although covered with modern iconography, preserves traces of older wall paintings.
Access: It can be accessed from a 3km detour on the road leading from Filiates to Tsamantas. It celebrates the day of memory and transportation of the relics of St. Athanasios on January the17th and May the 1st respectively.
