The museum Margaritiou is housed in a heritage building with a courtyard in the market(bazaar)area. This old house has a ground floor and a first floor built in 1893, according to the stone inscription on the wall of the courtyard. After intensive and large –scale conservation and restoration works by the Cultural Society of Margariti, it started to operate
in 2009 as a museum and cultural center and houses objects of pre-industrial era.The eastern ground floor room used to be the main storeroom. Today it serves as a museum space with information panels and video projections. An elevated main room(ontas) and a storeroom below it (katoe) used to be at the other side of the ground floor. Today the ontas comprises a museum exhibition room and the katoe serves as the museum’s main storage room. The current exhibition in the ontas is entitled “Wool, flax, loom and sewing machine”. The loom is still working and visitors are welcome to try it! The upper floor, once the living quarters of the house, has two rooms. These are the winter ontas with a fireplace and the formal ontas, the kalos ontas, with a carved and a painted wooden ceiling. Both rooms have a small toilet room(chreia) attached. Visitors today can see the winter ontas as it was at the end of the 19th century, while the formal ontas is today used for temporary museum exhibitions, meetings, seminars and educational progammes.
