The visitors can discover- through selected findings, informative material and new technology- the most significant historical moments of Thesprotia, focusing on the Late Hellenistic and the Roman Era. Most archaeological findings that evince the history of Thesprotia date back to those two eras.
Various exhibition units illustrate the most important settlements of the area as well as interesting aspects of the public and everyday life of the inhabitants of Ancient Thesprotia. The findings offer precious information about public life institutions, economic organization of settlements, public buildings, armature and worship while there is a presentation of various aspects of everyday life through selected“images” showing profession and occupation, housing, everyday life within the house, beautification and clothing.
The last unit of the exhibition is placed on the first floor of the Museum and houses findings related to the delicate and particularly emotional theme of death, focusing on the history and evolution of burial customs and practices in the area of Thesprotia. The Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa aims at encouraging visitors to discover and learn in depth the rich archaeological history of Thesprotia and acts as a precursor, offering information about various worth visiting
archaeological sites throughout the Prefecture.
After visiting the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa and acquiring the necessary information, visitors can tour the five well organized archaeological sites of the Prefecture, Elea, Gitana, Fanoti-Doliani, Dymokastro and Pyrgos Ragiou (Tower of Ragio). The above sites possess the necessary infrastructure for visitors and are located in a picturesque natural environment thus turning the visit into a pleasant cultural and natural experience.
